What to do during a visit to Whitby

With stunning views, peculiar finds, and some of the best fish and chips on the Yorkshire coast – or anywhere – Whitby is the perfect place for a staycation.

For a little inspiration, here are some ideas for your next visit.

Explore the Whitby Abbey

Now forever associated with Dracula, the beautiful ruins of the 13th-century Whitby abbey sits atop the East Cliff. It’s easy to see why this location deeply inspired Irish writer Bram Stoker as one of the key settings in his Gothic tale of a vampire coming to England, with some of the most panoramic views of Whitby town and coastline. Spend an afternoon exploring the ruins or learning about the abbey’s history at the on-site visitor centre – before returning for a spooky ghost tour at nightfall!

Walk the harbour walls

With fishing boats coming and going, as well as shops and restaurants, Whitby’s harbour is a lively place. Come here for a plate of top-notch fish and chips, or head out to sea with a boat trip out to sea to see a whole new perspective. You might even spot a seal or two.

Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum

One of Whitby’s most famous natives, this museum houses a collection of artefacts from Captain James Cook’s expeditions, as well as changing exhibitions on his life and legacy.

Go to Robin Hood’s Bay

Although it’s technically a few miles south of Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay is a beautiful fishing village that’s perfect for a day trip. Take a turn around its charming narrow streets, explore the shops, and enjoy the sweeping views of the bay.
