Work is set to begin on the significant renovation of The Glenridding Hotel near Ullswater this month, after the project to update The Inn Collection Group’s (ICG) Patterdale property was granted planning permission.
Collaborating with the Newcastle Studio of national architects GSSArchitecture, the renovation and redevelopment plans will look to maximise the opportunities presented from the stunning location.
Included in the plans is the introduction of a new canopied entrance which will provide guests and visitors with an accessible, covered entry and improved wayfinding on arrival.
The external facades will undergo comprehensive refurbishment, including sympathetic window replacement, roof replacements and new signage to improve the overall appearance and experience for guests of the hotel.
Acquired by ICG in February last year, the planning application was submitted last July after being developed through close collaboration between The Inn Collection Group and the full design team, including Method BC, IC Planning, BXB Interior Design, ECS Consultants, Jasper Kerr, and Sweco Building Control.
Working as Architects and Principal Designers on the scheme, GSSArchitecture is partnering with ICG across a number of developments in its portfolio, including Ambleside venues The Waterhead Inn and The Wateredge Inn in addition to the project transforming Tynemouth’s Park Hotel into The Tynemouth Castle Inn.
The Glenridding Hotel sits within the English Lake District World Heritage Site, and with parts of the building dating back to the 1860s, the works have been carefully designed to sensitively upgrade and improve the hotel, providing this historic building with a sustainable long-term future.
As well as alterations to the existing bedrooms, the existing spa area will be removed to create additional bed spaces. Upgrades to the hotel’s hospitality services will further improve the hotel’s offering for guests and visitors alike.
Louise Stewart, property director at The Inn Collection Group said, “We are delighted to be working with GSSArchitecture and bringing their expertise to the refurbishment of The Glenridding Hotel, continuing our fruitful partnership with them.
“The Glenridding Hotel is an iconic site that we were delighted to bring into the group and we are excited to get works started on a redevelopment that we are confident guests will love once completed.
“It is important to us that our renovations bring our own identity but at the same time are respectful of these iconic properties’ heritage and working with GSSArchitecture will help achieve that at these Inns.”
Simon Rennison-Rae, Partner at GSSArchitecture said, “We are thrilled that the works at Glenridding have been granted planning permission, which is a great result for the local area and The Inn Collection’s continued investment in the region.
“The historic hotel is in need of some careful renovations that GSS are excited to bring back to life. The Inn Collection Group are a great client to work with and we are excited to see this project progress on-site in the new year!”
